An extremely rare black-painted Schneider Xenon 2/5cm in collapsible, rangefinder-coupled M39 mount. The mount is made of brass, a feature that clearly distinguishes this early version from the later chrome production type.
The present lens belongs to a very small batch of only 8 examples delivered to Leitz in 1946. This unusually small delivery may suggest that the lenses formed a sample or evaluation batch, possibly at a time when Schneider and Leitz were considering some form of cooperation. In addition to its black-painted brass mount, the lens shows several minor constructional differences from the later chrome version.
The collapsible design follows the general form of the contemporary Summar and gives this early Xenon a particularly distinctive appearance.
The lens is in fine condition, with clean and clear optics, showing an attractive patina from years of use.
To our knowledge, this is only the second example of this black-painted Xenon with brass mount that we have encountered.
