Vintage silver print 12,7 x 17,7 cm Photographer's studio and reproduction stamp on the reverse, annotated in an unidentified hand in ink on the reverse Bates was an African American entertainer from Fountain Inn, South Carolina. He lost a leg at the age of 12 in a cotton gin accident. He subsequently taught himself to tap dance with a wooden peg leg.
