An exceptionally rare Voigtländer system camera prototype PR 2248, developed in the mid-1950s as an extremely compact interchangeable-lens camera for 24 × 36 mm film.
Designed by Dr. Faulhaber, creator of the Voigtländer Vitessa, the camera is described and illustrated by Claus Prochnow in Voigtländer Report 1, p. 3-102. After Faulhaber ceased working regularly for Voigtländer in 1956, development was continued by Wilhelm Reiche before the project was eventually abandoned.
The camera measures only about 58 × 65 × 109 mm including the lens and features an ingenious modular construction with detachable lens standard and removable rear section. Before separation, the film gate is closed light-tight by an internal flap operated via the large side screw.
Film transport and shutter cocking are combined in the large top-mounted wheel. The camera is fitted with a Voigtländer Ultron 2/50mm in Vario shutter and focusing mount. Prochnow also notes that the original detachable frame finder was already missing when the prototype was documented.
A highly sophisticated and historically important Voigtländer experimental design.
