Early Phantasmagoria Hand-Painted Lever-Operated Slide

probably French, double action, the black painted pine frame, 5½ x 10", with a 3¼ x 3¼" opening in which is mounted a brass plate with a ½ x 2¼" aperture. In the aperture is a snake composed of five separate hand-painted sections on a transparent material (possibly thin slices of bone). A brass lever at the side connects to a linkage which causes the snake to move with a separate lever to control the head movement. A rare early magic lantern slide. Ex Spira Collection
