An important and extensive Zeiss Ikon Contax outfit formerly owned by the renowned French photographer René-Jacques (René Giton, 1908–2003). René-Jacques was one of the notable figures of post-war French photography and, from 1946, a member of the influential Groupe des XV alongside photographers including Robert Doisneau and Willy Ronis.
The outfit comprises two Contax IIIa cameras nos. C 3357 and D 84525, Carl Zeiss Biogon 4.5/21mm no.1422018, Sonnar 1.5/50mm no.1886003, the extremely rare Boyer Apo-Saphir 9/50mm no.513641 with its original metal keeper, Sonnar 2/85mm no.541061, and an interesting unnumbered Leitz Elmar 4.5/13.5cm adapted for use on the Contax.
Also included is a Zeiss Ikon 440 universal finder for 21, 35, 50, 85 and 135mm lenses and the original leather carrying case, bearing the photographer’s handwritten name and address.
A particularly interesting and comprehensive working outfit with significant photographic provenance.
