In June 1960, a total of twenty Leica M2 cameras in grey paint finish (serial numbers 1005751–1005770) were specially produced for the United States Air Force in Europe (U.S.A.F.E.) and delivered to Wiesbaden on June 9 of that year. These cameras are among the rarest standard-production Leicas ever manufactured.
Offered here is serial no. 1005754, a particularly fine example from this extremely limited batch. It remains in excellent, original working condition, with a pleasing patina and only subtle edge wear. Small paint bubbles—common to this unique finish—are present, adding to its authentic vintage character. Accompanying the body is a Summicron 2/50mm lens, no. 1787693.
It is estimated that no more than 12 of these rare grey M2s have survived. In the past 20 years, no more than four such cameras have been sold in known public sales. This particular example is in the best condition we have seen. Beyond its historical significance, it stands out for its distinctive aesthetics—making it not only a highly collectible Leica, but also one of the most visually striking variants ever produced.
