An extremely rare red-painted Leica UW underwater housing, manufactured by Ernst Leitz Canada (ELCAN) for the U.S. Army and fitted with the permanently mounted ELCAN 90° f/2.8 wide-angle lens. This military special-purpose system ranks among the rarest Leica developments ever produced. Fewer than ten examples of this underwater housing are believed to exist worldwide.
The present example originates directly from the Ernst Leitz Canada development department and is fitted with a factory Leica MDa body without a serial number, intended for internal development and testing purposes.
All camera functions are operated externally through the housing, including focusing, aperture selection and the full range of shutter speeds. The absence of a serial number on the camera, together with its provenance from the ELCAN development department, makes the present system particularly significant.
A remarkable military Leica rarity with outstanding provenance, representing an exceptional example of specialised development work carried out by Ernst Leitz Canada.
