This portrait captures a rare and quietly ironic moment in photographic history. Henri Cartier-Bresson, founding member of Magnum and one of the defining figures of 20th-century photography, shaped the medium with his concept of the “decisive moment” (1952). Here, photographed in profile in Paris in 1953 by his close Magnum colleague Kryn Taconis, he appears not with his habitual Leica, but peering through the viewfinder of a Canon.
PROVENANCE: from the Estate of Rolf Fricke
Print in very good condition. Double weight paper. Light crease visible in the right image area, only effecting the background of the photograph. Gentle traces of abrasion on the edges. Slight discolouration visible in the exposed area of the sheet.
