Extremely rare and impressive mirror lens by Carl Zeiss: the Mirotar 5.6/1000 mm in Contarex mount, originating from the very first batch produced in 1964, of which only about 8 lenses were initially assembled. The Mirotar 1000 mm formed part of the professional lens program for the Zeiss Ikon Contarex system and represented one of the most extreme super-telephoto optics available for 35 mm photography at the time.
This remarkable mirror (catadioptric) lens employs a folded optical design using mirrors instead of conventional refractive elements, allowing an enormous focal length in a comparatively compact construction. Only around 28 lenses were produced between 1964 and 1970, mostly on special order, making surviving examples exceptionally rare today.
The offered lens is preserved in very good condition (plastic on the handle broken), with good optics, and is accompanied by its original wooden transport box and the original bayonet front cap. A spectacular and highly unusual Zeiss super-telephoto lens, produced in extremely small numbers for the prestigious Contarex system.
