A very rare pre-production example of the Sigma Mark-I, the first 35mm SLR camera marketed by Sigma.
According to the available provenance, the present chrome-finished camera was produced in 1974 as part of a small group of pre-series cameras and displayed as a sample at Photokina 1974, two years before the official introduction of the Mark-I in 1976.
The production Mark-I was manufactured in black finish, reportedly in a relatively small series of approximately 2,000 cameras. The present camera differs noticeably in its chrome finish and represents an earlier stage in the development of Sigma’s first camera.
The Mark-I was based on the Ricoh Singlex TLS design and features an M42 screw mount, TTL exposure metering and a vertically travelling metal focal-plane shutter with speeds up to 1/1000 sec.
The camera bears serial no.74120-007 and is accompanied by a matching Sigma Mini-Zoom 3.5/39-80mm no.740018.
A rare pre-production version of Sigma’s first camera and an interesting document from the company’s early development as a camera manufacturer.
