Mascher's Improved Stereoscope was patented on March 8th, 1853. This beautiful invention by J. F. Mascher, incorporated the use of two ordinary lenses in a simple arrangement on a supplementary lid or flip, which allowed the image to be viewed in three dimensions. The viewing panel has very clear gilded lettering for Mascher's patent, lifting the viewing panel exposes a rich gilded advertisement for 'R.H. Vange's Daguerreian Rooms, San Francisco'. The daguerreotypes presented in this stereoscope are of two gentlemen, one sitting on a chair, the other one standing next to him, his hand on the other's shoulder. The daguerreotype and the stereoscope are in very good condition.
