The Leica MP was first unveiled at the “Photokina” fair in Cologne in 1956. Far more than a mere variation of the Leica M3, the MP distinguished itself as the only serial-production Leica to feature its own consecutive numbering system—separate from the standard fabrication numbers used on all other models.
With only 402 units ever produced, the MP ranks among the rarest Leica cameras ever made. Of these, just 141 were finished in black paint, primarily intended for professional photographers. The MP soon became a trusted companion of legendary Magnum photojournalists such as Alfred Eisenstaedt and David Douglas Duncan.
The concept for the MP originated from requests by prominent American press photographers who sought to combine their M-series cameras with the advantages of the Leicavit rapid winder, then available only for the Leica IIIf. Their feedback inspired Dr. Ludwig Leitz, head of Leica’s development department, to initiate the MP project in 1955.
The example offered here, MP no. 33, is a highly desirable black paint version showing the distinctive patina and wear characteristic of years of professional use. Its beautifully aged surface, with subtle paint bubbling and brass highlights, enhances its authentic vintage appeal. The camera was originally delivered to Brandt, Sweden, on 29 July 1957, and is accompanied by a matching black paint Leicavit and a black paint / brass-mount Summicron 2/5cm lens no.1474885, which was delivered to the same dealer only one day later, on 30 July 1957.
