He initially made his mark in South Africa, where he documented the Sharpeville massacre in 1960. His images from this event were crucial in the trial that proved the victims' innocence. Berry's compelling work caught the attention of Henri Cartier-Bresson, who invited him to join Magnum Photos in 1962, and he became a full member by 1967.
Berry has had a prolific career, capturing significant historical and social events worldwide, from the Soviet invasion of Czechoslovakia to the famine in Ethiopia, and apartheid in South Africa. His commitment to classic photojournalism is evident in his meticulous approach and preference for natural light, which allows him to convey authentic and powerful narratives through his Images.
A significant aspect of Berry's work is his long-standing relationship with Leica cameras. He has used Leica cameras throughout his career, starting with models like the M3 and M2, and later the M4P, R reflexes, M6, M7, and digital models like the M8 and M9P. This choice of equipment has been integral to his ability to consistently capture high-quality, impactful images.
