Leica M2 black paint 'Sarkis' *

A very special Leica M2 black paint, owned and used by the renowned French conceptual artist Sarkis Zabunyan. The word “KRIEGSSCHATZ” (“war treasure” in German), engraved on the back of the top plate, became a central motif in numerous exhibitions and works by Sarkis and is widely regarded as a key element of his artistic vocabulary.

The camera is offered together with a brass-mount Summicron 2/50 mm, serial no. 1474808. The lot further includes a signed copy of the highly sought-after art book Blackout Leica Museum (Berlin, 1976, near-mint condition).

Born in 1938, Sarkis Zabunyan—known professionally simply as SARKIS—is a French artist of Armenian origin. His interest in art began in his youth after encountering an illustration of Edvard Munch’s The Scream in a newspaper. In 1964, he emigrated to Paris with his wife and established a studio in Villejuif. His work has since been exhibited internationally, and in 1980 he was appointed professor at the École des Arts Décoratifs in Strasbourg.

An exceptional Leica with outstanding artistic provenance, bridging photographic history and postwar conceptual art.
