Leica M2 Canada Prototypes

Here are two specimens of Leica M2 cameras (top plates engraved with “Wetzlar”), with the unusual markings PL-P 0001 and PL-P 0002. In fact, both shutter crates are internally engraved “937622”, which represents the second serial number ever of a Leica M2 camera produced in Canada. Individual cases of Leica M cameras from the Canadian Leitz plant have surfaced, bearing markings which read “PL-P 000X”. The purpose of these markings is yet unknown. The cameras are prototypes or pre-series cameras of the Midland M2 production and served the Leica constructor Heinrich Staubach, working for Leitz Canada from 1954 until 1974, as test cameras. M2 PL-P 000 0003 was sold in the 21st. WestLicht auction. The existence of a Leica M3 camera with the number “PL-P 0007” from the estate of a former Leitz Canada camera designer is known.
