Elcan 1/90mm

Extremely rare lens with clean optics and complete with all four distance rings (4457 for infinity, 4149 for 100 m, 4149 for 50 m and 4149 for 20 m) Leitz Canada’s lens design legend Dr. Walter Mandler was not only responsible for lenses such as the famous 50 mm Noctilux f/1.0 or the 180 mm APO-Telyt f/3.4, but also for bathbreaking lens designs which were done on military order. The 90 mm Elcan-M f/1.0 lens (C164) is doubtlessly the most stunning Leica lens designed by Dr. Mandler and made by Leitz Canada for the U.S. Navy. With its impressivelylarge diameter front element it has a wider front than a 560 mm Telyt f/6.8 lens, for example. The lens was designed as a fixed-focus system, with setting rings for different focal distances. It is believed that only ten pieces of the 90 mm Elcan have been completed, of which the one offered here is lens number 5. Dr. Walter Mandler gilt als Legende unter den Optikrechnern. Bei Leitz Canada war er nicht nur verantwortlich für berühmte Objektive wie das Noctilux 1:1,0/50 mm oder das APO-Telyt 1:3,4/180 mm, sondern auch für bahnbrechende Objektiventwicklungen auf dem Gebiet der Militäroptiken. Bei dem Elcan-M 1:1,0/90 mm handelt es sich zweifelsfrei um das atemberaubendste Leica Objektiv, das von Dr. Mandler für die U.S. Marine entwickelt und bei Leitz Canada gefertigt wurde. Mit seiner eindrucksvoll großen Frontlinse hat es eine größere Eintrittspupille als beispielsweise ein Telyt 1:6,8/560 mm. Das Objektiv ist als fix-Focus Konstruktion konzipiert, wobei spezielle Distanzringe für bestimmte Aufnahmeentfernungen verwendet werden mussten. Man geht heute davon aus, dass nur zehn solcher Objektive überhaupt fertiggestellt wurden, wobei es sich bei dem hier angebotenen Exemplar um das fünfte Objektive dieser Serie handelt.
