In 1994 Leica introduced a prestigious anniversary edition of 1,640 cameras to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Leica M system. The Leica M6J combined the iconic design language of the early Leica M3 with the modern technology of the M6. Each set was supplied with a special Elmar-M 2.8/50mm lens, produced in a beautifully recreated retro design reminiscent of the original Elmar lenses of 1957.
Before the edition received its final designation “M6J”, Leica produced several prototype development units. Among the earliest concepts considered was the name “M3 Jubilee”; however, Leica ultimately decided to officially release the edition under the well-known designation M6J.
Offered here is the very first of these prototypes number 0001. This historically important camera marks the true beginning of the anniversary project. It is preserved in near-mint condition and comes with its matching unengraved prototype retro-style Elmar 2.8/50mm.
