The Leica 72 in the 18×24 mm image format, based on the Leica IIIa, was produced in 1963, with approximately 150 cameras manufactured by Leitz Canada and around 70 examples produced in Wetzlar.
Offered here is a Leica IIIC 18×24 (serial no. 397605), an experimental prototype camera dating from 1946. The camera is equipped with a half-frame mask in the viewfinder and advances 72 half-format exposures (18×24 mm) on standard 35 mm film.
According to the Leitz Factory Archive control book, the three cameras with serial numbers 397604–397605–397606 were recorded on 10 April 1946 under the code LOOHW (image format 18×24 mm) and handed over to the Albert Construction department.
Based on current archival research, this camera can be regarded as one of the first half-frame 18×24 Leica cameras. The camera no.397604 was shown in Lager I 'Cameras' on page 81.
